New Members

October 3rd, 2007

First of all, thank you to all of those who came to the ISBE information session on Wednesday night. It was great to see so many new faces.

FSG will not be having an individual information session. Instead, all new members should come to the Principles of Finance class this Sunday, October 7th. The class is in Jacobs G40 (Kellogg) and runs from 4-5 PM. The six-week class is mandatory for all those that want to join other divisions of FSG in the future. For more information, see the information session handouts attached below. We will also be sending out a finalized syllabus shortly over the ISBE listserv.

Students who have been in FSG in the past or who have had finance experience that goes beyond the introductory class can contact one of the FSG Directors to inquire about joining a different group in FSG.

Fall Quarter Programming

September 27th, 2007

We are excited to announce the following programming for Fall Quarter:

Education

Once again, Kellogg students will be teaching an introductory finance course called Principles of Finance. This class is provided for new members who wish to join other groups within FSG and also for anyone who just wants to learn more about finance. Topics covered will include careers in finance, analyzing financial statements, valuing stocks and bonds, and much more. You will also have the opportunity to freely interact with the Kellogg students. The class will most likely be on Sundays at 4PM, starting on October 7th; however, the date is tentative, so we will send out more information once the details are confirmed. The class and final exam is mandatory for those who wish to join the Investment Research or Principal Investments division.

Investment Research

The Investment Research division will continue with the new format that was introduced towards the end of Spring Quarter last school year. During our weekly meetings, members will break up into teams and be given a stock to research; after a period of time, the teams reconvene and debate the investment merits of the stock. The group also publishes a quarterly investment thesis portfolio, which is comprised of stock reports that are written by members throughout the quarter. Finally, everyone has the opportunity to manage a mock portfolio, and the group with the best performance at the end of the quarter will receive prizes. Investment Research will be starting on October 7th at 3 PM.

Principal Investments

The Nugget Fund, which holds FSG’s real-money investments, will look to achieve high returns during the quarter. The group is comprised of a small number of FSG members who conduct in-depth research on potential investments (using proprietary valuation models and other in-house research methods) and decide as a group which companies to invest in. Current investments include Berkshire Hathaway and ExxonMobil, among others. Principal Investments starts next week and will meet more frequently than the other two divisions.

If you were a member of an FSG group last year, we will be sending group-specific emails out shortly with further instructions. New members are encouraged to attend the ISBE information session next Wednesday, October 3, at 8PM in Annenberg G21. We will be giving out more information about how to join each of the three groups, so please do come.

Summer Information

May 27th, 2007

FSG programming has now concluded for the school year. We want to thank everyone who participated in the Education, Investment Research, and Principle Investments divisions–they were a great success! We will be working hard over the summer to bolster the opportunities that FSG offers, so look forward to new classes and more in-depth activities next year.

We will also be sending out invitations over the summer to those who qualified to join the Investment Research and/or Principle Investments groups.

If you have any questions or comments, then feel free to e-mail the directors (contact information in the About page).

March 10th, 2007

We are excited to announce two different education offerings for the spring quarter: Principles of Finance and Introduction to Options.

  • Principles of Finance: This is FSG’s introductory finance class, which for the first time will be led by members of the Kellogg Finance Club. Placement into other areas of FSG usually requires successful completion of the class. Please find here the: Syllabus **Note: The course begins the first Sunday after classes start.
  • Introduction to Options: An advanced level seminar, the Introduction to Options class will be primarily discussion based for the first half of the course, which focuses on traditional options theory, and will cover practical applications during the second half. Previous knowledge of finance is required. Check back for more information and the syllabus.
